Category: Accessible Games
Hi all,
sorry the subject line wasn't more clear, but I couldn't think of a way to best describe it in a subject line. Wasn't surewhether or not to post this here or on the accessible game board, but here goes. When i exitthe great toy robbery, my hard drive grinds a bit, so i wait for it to stop before reloading jaws. When I do reload jaws, it grinds a bit more, and jaws is a bit sluggish in coming up, but usually things are fine after a minute or two. I don't seem to have the problem if i play one short game, but it usually occurs after playing a long time. Tonight, I played a really long time, and suddenly the game wouldn't start, and just played those piano like notes it plays with some dialogues, but since jaws wasn't running, I had no idea what message came up, so I tried quickly to restart jaws, but it wouldn't let jaws start, and just played one of those chord like things, so i tried to shut down, but since jaws wouldn't start, I may've been on stand by instead of shut down. I finally had to just turn it off and restart. things were ok after that. So what's the problem here. I may have to give up the great toy robbery, nuts, and i'd gotten to santa one time, but i'm hoping there is a solution for this other than just not playing it anymore. I don't have any problem like this with the other games, egg hunt, pigeon panic, duck blaster, deegout, or trucker. I have 512 mb of ram.

I really wish the l-works games would permit jaws to continue working as blind gamers, kitchensink and other self-voicing games do. Then I could use the jaws sleep mode to shut it off and it would respond in case of some other interruption.
But, Wonder Woman, I don't have an answer for you. Sorry for turning your post into a rant.
You might bring up narrator if jaws doesn't respond.
Bob
Unfortunately I don't have an answer either wonderwoman but i didn't know that you could make jaws stop until something else comes up on the screen. So how can we do the sleep mode?
It would be a useful think to know.
Okay, my friend, here you go. I've found sleep mode helpful at various times, and a good tool to know.
Sleep mode is used to silence jaws while another application is active. An example of a time when you may want to do this is when another program with its own speech is running, (i.e. Kurzweil 1000, OpenBook, or Pigin Panic from L-Works.)
To invoke sleep mode, bring up the program you wish to speak instead of jaws.
Press insert+f2 to bring up the "jaws manager selection" dialog, and arrow down to "configuration manager" and press enter.
IMPORTANT: make sure that if you press insert+t to read the title that it has the name of your program somewhere in it, and doesn't say ...default.jcf.
Hit the alt key to bring up the menus, and right arrow to "set options" and hit enter.
Arrow up one time to "advanced options" and hit enter.
The first checkbox should be for sleep mode. Hit your space bar to check the option, and tab to the ok button and hit enter.
Press ctrl+s to save the file.
Press alt+f4 to close the manager, and you're done.
You may have to restart jaws for this change to take effect. Here is what the jaws help says about sleep mode.
"Sleep Mode
These check boxes are used to turn off JAWS processing within specific applications. This is generally used in applications that provide their own speech
or Braille support. We recommend you do not set this option in Default.jcf, as this would stop all processing of JAWS commands.
List of 2 items
• Enable: If checked, this option enables sleep mode, and turns off JAWS processing. This check box is cleared by default.
• Unload Synthesizer: If checked, the synthesizer is unloaded from memory, freeing it for use by other applications. This check box is cleared by default.
This check box is only available if the Enable check box is checked.

Let me know if you have questions.
Thanks,
Bob
Thanks Bob. Very helpfull. So if in the title it says defolt how do we swich to the spessifick application file so we won't affect the defolt?
hi again all, not sure, but this may solve the problem. After it finishes a game, when i get bonked on the heade by an elf lol, and i have to start a new game, when it says, please choose from the following menu, if i wait a few seconds before starting a game or exiting, I don't seem to have the problem, but if i choose an option the second it says please choose from the following menu, then that seems to be when i have th eproblem. I'm not 1000 percent sure on this, I played a few games and that's what i did. I didn't play a really really long time, but the last time i played several times, and i did wait a few seconds before choosing an option.

Sounds like you may be too fast for the program, but that's just a guess.
Bob
p.s. Nicos, I'll have to wait on that answer. That was a good question and I don't have an immediate answer.
Okay, Nikos, you asked what to do if you found yourself in the default.jcf file, when trying to turn sleep mode on.
Well, you don't want to be there, so I would press alt+f4. The reason you don't want to use the default.jcf file is that this file applies to everything that isn't covered by anything else.
That might include jaws itself, and that would in effect telling jaws not to work. I really don't know how you would get out of that one without sighted assistance.
So, just hit alt+f4, or, if you are dareing, you can open the jcf file for the particular program manually, but that would take a longer more detailed explanation.
Bob
kk people, first of all, let me put my two cents on how you could know what file you're looking at. Press insert +t, and in the title file, it'll say which file you're editing. If it says "default.jcf, then you're not in the correct program, so exit the configuration manager, and navigate to the program, and bring up the configuration manger. Press insert +t again, and it should not say "default.jcf.
Finally, I think that this topic belongs in accessible games, since it does discuss an accessible game, so I will move it to that board.
sorry mad dog, but like i said, I just wasn't wasn't ssure which board to post it in since it was a game issue, but it's also sort of a tech or geeky issue, and i didn't want to post the same topic on both boards. sorry,
wonderwoman
WonderWoman fret not. Let those who care sort it out.
I'm afraid that we kind of got side tracked anyway. Did you solve your problem?
Bob
Thanks Bob and Ather for the help.
Much appreshiated.
Nikos
Hi Bob,
well, sort of, there was once when it grinded for half a second, very gently, but it still wasn't as bad as it has been. I played 2 games today, and didn't have the problem. I think perhaps it will stil grind just a bit when exiting, but waiting a few seconds before choosing an option will probably help a little bit. the system requirements on the games link didn't say anything about having to have more than 512 mb for any of th egames, including the great toy robbery. Well, at least I'm getting to the point where i'm getting more points in those quick games, and i've gotten to santa 2 or 3 times, although he squashes me fairly quick, lol.
wonderwoman
sounds good.
Any more questions ask them or rant about them. It'll all be sorted out somehow. <grin>
Bob
thanks bob, I'll give everyone a break for now, but have 2 questions I'll post separately, so it will be easier for people to read, they can read one without reading th eother. I never start my topics on the rant board, because I find my original posts are th eones people most like to pick on, so I mostly just start my own posts either here in accessible games or on the geeks board, or safe haven or boos sometimes, but I don't start topics on the rant board or lets talk anymore, but if i identify with a poster, I'll lend him or her my suppport and understanding whether or not others like it or not, lol.
